In the morning, the first thing we were excited about were our Chinese names. Yes, simple and beautiful Chinese names for each and every students! When teacher Yi called each name out aloud in Chinese, the students had to guess whose name it was. And to our surprise, all of us got it right and it was actually not that hard to guess. Because the names are mainly the Chinese translation of the sound of our English names. Some had a popular Chinese last name; others are given games only. All are two to three characters long and sound really cute. Some of us even took the challenge to write our own Chinese names at activity time.
Well, much easier than writing our Chinese names is to read and to write Chinese numbers. Most of us got the hang of it after several times of practicing. At the beginning, teacher Maiyan led us listening to an audio story book in both English and Chineae and practicing reading aloud the numbers. Then we practiced counting in Chinese at transition time over and over again. We also learned how to write them by doing some math, writing and art activities.
After snack, we watched a short video and learned how to read Suan Pan - the abacus originated from China, that is believed to be able to help kids learn math even in this computer era. For those who got the concept, Suan Pan is such a cool counting tool! Of course it does much more than what we had used it for today, in the limited camp hours. Still, we found it very impressive and it was fun to play with it! Some of us even made a craft version of Suan Pan during after-care hours!
Besides learning numbers and Suan Pan, we kept practicing our paper cutting, calligraphy, and chopsticks skills. We are looking forward to new activities and another fun day tomorrow!
